Sunday’s Theme – The “Be-Attitudes”

There is a section of about 3 chapters in the book of Matthew called “The Sermon on the Mount”. It records a pretty complete summary of Jesus’ teachings. There have been many interpretations of the sermon – from saying these are absolute rules you must follow; to saying that Jesus knew there was no way any human could ever attain the standard set in the sermon, but that they should strive to act with kindness, mercy and love in everything they do. The part that we will look at on Sunday is the very beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, often called “The Beatitudes”, or the blessings.

As you read them, consider asking yourself the following questions:

  1. What does the term “blessed” mean in the context of the Beatitudes, and how does it differ from common usage?
  2. How do the Beatitudes challenge conventional norms and values?
  3. What are some practical ways to live out the values presented in the Beatitudes in today’s society?
  4. Which Beatitudes resonate most strongly with you, and why?
  5. How can the Beatitudes help us connect with those who are struggling or suffering?

The Beatitudes

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
